“All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.”
* Oscar Wilde.
My work explores the relationship between individual philosophies, reflection, light and portraiture by using light itself to describe and draw. I chip away at a layer of paint carefully coated upon a pane of glass to reveal self-portraits. I also utilise varying light sources in my process.
The intermittent flashes of light manipulate individual attention spans as the faces in the work become anticipatory tools for the audience. The piece then evolves into an active dialogue between the work and the viewer.
