‘Association’ is a word which best describes the outcome of our sensory processes. If insight is gained on a person’s positive association with a specific sight, sound, taste, touch or smell, is it possible to manipulate this as a method of overcoming negative associations within a different subject?
My practice consists of video, sound and sculptural combinations to interactively stimulate the viewer’s associations through direct contact with the admired components. I am interested in the theory of manipulating factors relating to the gore of anatomical and medical sights, sounds, smells, touch and processes through the use of aesthetics and familiarities that are popular and understood within western culture, in an attempt to formulate positive- re-associations with the internal aspect of our anatomy and emphasise its worth. My work exploits a juxtaposition; our acceptance of exterior and material values against our apprehension surrounding internal engineering, allowing one element to instigate the progression of the other to improve the relationship with our internal anatomy.
The nervous system is responsible for our response to this psychotherapeutic technique.
