Ellis Charman
My work revolves around the spaces that I occupy. It takes the areas that are deemed insignificant and often ignored, such as the corners of a room and the ceiling, and encouraging the viewer to accept their existence. This is achieved through the medium of drawing – I produce delicate, incredibly detailed “masses” which are then installed into the space, subsequently attracting the viewer and encouraging them to interact with their surroundings.
The process I use to create each piece has become increasingly important and is a time consuming, repetitive technique. Considering that this remains constant, my works tend to undergo subtle changes. Colour is also important, and it is this simple factor that can alter the meaning of the piece, and its placement when installing it in a space.
